We’re extremely proud to report that FlauntIT 2012 has been a resounding success! The event received an overwhelming response from the school community, and our photoshoot slots were fully subscribed from the get-go.

Here’s some on-the-ground reporting done by our resident writer, El-Malique:

“Get it. Got it. Love it. Flaunt it!” Those were the words of Rodel Natividad Casio, a world renowned Filipino Photographer who loved flaunting ‘it’ in her photos. At SMU’s very own FlauntIT event, students were given a chance to do the same. The professional team of photographers, hairdressers and stylists from Beauty Box Studios were ready to transform the average joe to the billionaire Donald Trump look!

So what did our fellow SMU students think about the event? A year two accountancy student thought it was excellent timing as the photos helped to spruce up her résumé, and would undoubtedly be useful in the bid for an internship this summer. This view was held among other year 2s and 3s as they also strived to beautify their portfolio.  That said, I also found Year 1s getting a slice of the action. According to a Y1 SOB student, it is never too early to start on your portfolio. “Gotta take the photo while I’m still looking young, right?”, she cheekily added.

Hairdressers busy transforming just-some to awe-some

Behind the scenes was Mush, second-in-charge of operations at the BeautyBox-FlauntIT booth. He shared with me about the difficulty for students to achieve a professional look at an affordable price, and how the SISS-Beauty Box collaboration has made things easier.

Mush also believes that it is important to have a good corporate image for the benefits it brings.  A good picture will distinguish you from other job applicants gunning for the same job, and help you leave a deeper impression even a potential employer meets you. Additionally, professional photos are perfect for networking sites like LinkedIn. This goes a long way in giving your online profile an added professional yet personal touch.

Y U NO COMPILE?!

So what can we do to gain some reprieve from this whirling chaos? Since we spend most of our time hard at work in school, here are a few things you can do in and around SIS:

1)    Bring a Frisbee!

Why? Well for one, frisbees are cheap to buy and are light to carry around, more importantly, you can whip it out anywhere, anytime! Feeling the drain after being cooped up in the GSR for hours? Take a frisbee out and head on down to campus green, in fact, all you need is enough space to throw the frisbee around and you could literally play anywhere, even if you’re on the third floor of SIS.

C’mon, you know it’s fun to play target practice with the light switch

Turn it into a game, try to make them curve around the pillars, bounce off the floor, whatever you can think of really.

Or try catching it like this!

Besides, frisbees are extremely light, so you won’t have to worry about damaging school property if your Frisbee goes off course. Also, Frisbees can be played at low intensity levels so you won’t be drained of energy after your break. In fact, exercising a little would be good for your body and can provide you with higher energy levels to power you through your next round of meetings. 2)    Go for a late night movie

Staying late in school for a project and there’s nothing else to do during your break? Go for a late night movie, there’s no one else around to vie for seats and you’ll have the theatre all to yourself! The seats are comfy, there’s surround sound, and with school this nearby, there’s less time wasted on travelling. And… it’s probably the only time you have to catch up on the latest entertainment. It’s sad, but all too true, so make your breaks count!

3)    Go rollerblading

Time to pick up a new sport people! So why rollerblading? Other than its obvious health reasons, skating in school means that you would have nice and flat surfaces to learn on without worrying too much about falling. Secondly, it’s easy to learn. Once you get the stopping technique down, you’re go to go! Some may have concerns that it would be expensive to buy a pair of skates but fret not, rollerblades can be rented from SMUX so you can try them out before deciding to get your own. Imagine all the cool tricks you could do in and around the school with your pair of blades!

Don’t forget about your safety gear before you go down that slope!

Also, with SMU being in the heart of the city and all, skating is an awesome way to explore and travel to nearby places to chill with your peeps, be it for a nice cool beer or supper at the Esplanade and to take in the city’s scenery and constantly evolving skyline. With skating, you can go further in half the time and it’s a great activity to bond with friends over and still be back in school to complete your projects in good time.

4)    Have your meetings in places other than a GSR

Sure, the GSRs are great places to hold project meetings, to plan things out carefully before your group dives into the thick of your projects but these places can get dreary at times. Shake up your meetings a little by holding your meetings in other places like ICB or Starbucks where you would be free from the confines of the GSR walls.

Who knows? Having meetings at these places is great for team bonding  and could help to create a more relaxed environment which is excellent for generating novel ideas that make your projects standout. Life’s too short; try something different for a change and you may be surprised by what you get out of it!

AND…..

5)    Don’t forget to have your supper!

Yes, we are all IS students and sometimes, we get so engrossed with our work that we forgo our meals. BUT…food is life, and we can’t continue with our projects until our bellies are filled. Again, our school is in town, which means that we get to enjoy far more choices and that we shouldn’t confine ourselves to just Mr Bean, Kopitiam or Subway because there’s great food around! Try out the dimsum and Thai food at Sunshine plaza, or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, there’s Baja Fresh that serves Mexican at Hotel Rendezvous.

 And if you can spare a little more time, why not strap on your blades and head on down to glutton’s bay at the Esplanade for some stingray or to the food court at Le Meridian for some cheap and good Korean!

Remember, work is important but don’t forget to inject some fun into your time in school as well, after all, university’s a once in a lifetime experience so make it an enjoyable one!

Clarissa is an adventurous Business Solutions Committee member who will partake in any endeavor as long as long as it involves food. She loves riding her totally awesome motorcycle into the sunset to look for great food when she’s not stuck in school trying to complete her projects or trying to avoid them by tossing her frisbee around with friends in the middle of the night.
